COMPOUNDING AT HOME · GUIDE GAL-07

Giving a compounded preparation to a child

A guide for parents and carers

Check the child, preparation, concentration and dose at every administration. Anyone sharing care must know what has already been given.

01Check before every dose

Check the child’s name on the label, the preparation, concentration, amount, route of administration and time. Do not calculate the dose by reducing an adult’s dose. If weight, prescription or concentration has changed, confirm the dose with the paediatrician or pharmacy.

02Measure with the correct device

For liquids, use the specified graduated device and check the units. Do not confuse mg with mL or use household teaspoons. Shake when the label requires it. For the measuring procedure, see the GAL-05 guide.

03Give slowly by mouth

If the child can take the liquid by mouth, keep them seated or upright. With an oral syringe, point the tip towards the inside of the cheek and give small amounts, allowing time to swallow. Do not squirt the entire dose into the back of the throat. Feeding tubes or swallowing problems require specific instructions.

04Do not hide the dose without checking

Before mixing medicine with food or drink, ask whether this is compatible and how to do it. Do not put it in a full feeding bottle or a portion the child may not finish. Do not open capsules or dilute preparations on your own initiative.

05Coordinate everyone caring for the child

Record the time and amount immediately after administration and share the record with other carers. Do not give another dose unless you are sure the previous one has not already been given. Keep preparations for different children separate and store everything out of their sight and reach.

06Vomiting, a spat-out dose or an error

If the child vomits, spits out the medicine or you do not know how much they took, do not automatically repeat the dose. Contact the paediatrician or pharmacy, stating the preparation, amount, time and what you observed. Seek medical help immediately for an excessive dose; for breathing difficulties, loss of consciousness or other serious symptoms, call 112.

A confirmed dose and a shared record help prevent missed and duplicate doses.

This guide explains general use. For amounts, frequency, duration, storage and specific methods, follow the label and the instructions supplied with your preparation.
