COMPOUNDING AT HOME · GUIDE GAL-08

Gels and preparations for the mouth

Local use and application methods

Check whether the preparation is to be applied to the mucosa, used as a rinse or taken by mouth. These methods are not interchangeable.

01Identify the method of use

Read the route of administration and the area to be treated. “For the mouth” does not automatically mean “to be swallowed”. An oral solution to swallow, a mouthwash and a gel for local use may require different methods. If the label is unclear, ask the pharmacy first.

02For a gel applied locally

Wash your hands. Take the prescribed amount and apply it only to the indicated area using a clean finger or the specified applicator. Avoid contaminating the nozzle and close the container again. Do not put a skin gel inside your mouth or apply the product at the back of your throat unless instructed to do so.

03For rinsing or gargling

Measure the volume using the specified device and follow any prescribed dilution. If the preparation is intended for rinsing and spitting out, spit it out after use and do not swallow it. Do not improvise gargling for a child or someone who cannot do it safely.

04Allow the specified contact time

Follow the contact time and any waiting period before eating, drinking or rinsing specified for your preparation. Do not use one fixed interval for all gels or mouthwashes. If you use several mouth products, ask about their order and intervals; do not mix them in the container.

05Children and swallowing difficulties

Use only a prescribed preparation suitable for the recipient. For young children, the amount and method must be explained explicitly: some gels pose a choking risk if applied incorrectly. Do not use a product prescribed for an adult to treat a child.

06When to seek help

Ask for a review if burning persists, symptoms worsen or there is no improvement within the time agreed with your doctor or dentist. If an unintended amount is swallowed, contact a healthcare professional immediately. Breathing difficulties or significant swelling of the tongue or throat require urgent assistance via 112.

Amount, application site and contact time depend on the formulation: follow your preparation’s instructions.

This guide explains general use. For amounts, frequency, duration, storage and specific methods, follow the label and the instructions supplied with your preparation.
