COMPOUNDING AT HOME · GUIDE GAL-10

The preparation’s appearance has changed

When to contact the pharmacy

An unexpected change requires a check before use. A normal appearance, however, does not guarantee that the preparation is still usable.

01Recognise an unexpected change

Report unusual colour or smell, lumps, new crystals, phase separation, changed consistency, visible mould, leaks or container damage. Compare the preparation with what was explained when you collected it. Do not taste it to check whether it is still good.

02Sediment is not always a defect

A suspension may be expected to have sediment that redistributes with the specified shaking. Follow the label and the pharmacy’s explanations. If the sediment does not become uniform as expected, differs from usual or you are unsure it is normal, ask for a check. Do not automatically consider new sediment in a solution normal.

03Ask before using it again

If you notice an unexpected change, do not use the preparation before the pharmacy has clarified it. Do not heat, filter or dilute it, or add water or other ingredients to correct it. Cooling it again does not prove it is usable again.

04Prepare useful information

Have the label ready with the preparation’s name and number, use-by date and storage instructions. Describe what changed, when you noticed it, how it was stored and any exposure to heat or freezing. A photo may help describe it but cannot by itself prove quality or effectiveness.

05If a dose is due soon

Contact the pharmacy or doctor directly to find out how to proceed without delaying necessary treatment. Do not decide on your own to skip, double or replace the dose. For an animal, contact the vet. If you have already used the preparation, report the amount, time and any symptoms.

06Always follow the label and date

Normal appearance, smell and colour do not guarantee stability or safety. Do not use the preparation beyond its use-by date and follow the storage conditions. Consult the GAL-02 guide. For serious symptoms in a person, seek urgent help via 112; do not wait for a reply through the website.

Appearance can help flag a problem but does not replace checking the preparation.

This guide explains general use. For amounts, frequency, duration, storage and specific methods, follow the label and the instructions supplied with your preparation.

Need clarification? Contact the pharmacy directly on 0431 91001 and have the label ready. For an urgent problem, do not wait for a reply through the website.
