COMPOUNDING AT HOME · GUIDE GAL-09

Veterinary compounded preparations

Administration and management at home

The preparation is intended for the animal named on the label. Follow the veterinary prescription and do not adapt a human treatment yourself.

01Check the animal and prescription

Check the animal’s name, species, preparation, concentration, dose, route and times. Do not use the same prescription for another animal. Tell the vet about weight changes, other treatments and previous reactions; do not recalculate the dose without instructions.

02Prepare the dose

For a liquid, use the specified device and shake when required. Do not confuse mg with mL. Do not open, divide or crush capsules or other forms without instructions. Ask the pharmacy for a demonstration if the measuring device is unclear.

03Follow the agreed technique

Ask the vet or pharmacy to explain how to give the preparation to your animal and whether it should be given with food. Do not change the route of administration. If the animal refuses or you cannot proceed safely, ask for an alternative technique instead of forcing it.

04Do not alter food or the preparation

Before mixing with food, ask about compatibility and suitable quantities. Do not put the dose in a full bowl that may not be eaten completely or may be shared. For a preparation applied to skin, ask how to prevent licking and unwanted contact with people or other animals.

05Record doses and store separately

Record the time and dose if several people care for the animal. Keep the medicine in its original container, separate from human medicines and out of reach of animals and children. Flavoured preparations may attract the animal: do not leave the bottle or capsules accessible.

06Spat-out dose, vomiting or an error

Do not automatically repeat a spat-out or vomited dose. Contact the vet with the amount, time and symptoms. For accidental ingestion, an excessive dose or significant symptoms, seek veterinary help immediately and have the label ready. Do not wait for a reply from the website.

One animal, one prescription, one checked dose: do not share preparations.

This guide explains general use. For amounts, frequency, duration, storage and specific methods, follow the label and the instructions supplied with your preparation.

Need clarification? Contact the pharmacy directly on 0431 91001 and have the label ready. For an urgent problem, do not wait for a reply through the website.

Sources and limits of this guide

Sources consulted on 03/10/2026 for general precautions. Information about an individual medicine does not validate other compounded formulations: doses, concentrations, durations, age limits and intervals remain those of the prescribed preparation.
